Originally made from wool, jersey material is a soft and stretchy light knit fabric. Today, it’s usually made from cotton, cotton blends and synthetic fibres. It can usually be found in light-to-medium weights and is used for a large variety of household and clothing items.
Due to it’s knitted nature (not woven), jersey has a great deal of give and stretch. Depending on the knit style, two types of jersey fabric can be made: Standard jersey material - better known as single knit or plain knit, it’s made using one set of needles that appears smooth on one side and plied on the other.
Double knit jersey fabric - also called interlock jersey, it’s made from two pieces of single knit jersey that have been sewn together to create a smooth and soft surface on both sides.
