What is taffeta fabric and what is it used for?

Taffeta is a thick, crisp and noisy woven fabric! It’s made from silk or cuprammonium rayons as well as acetate and polyester. It’s considered a ‘higher-end’ fabric, often used for fancy gowns, wedding dresses and also features in the home on curtains or decorative cushions.

The history of taffeta

“Taffeta” originates from the Persian words for “woven” and “twisted, suggesting that the fabric first appeared in this region of the world. It’s most likely that taffeta was introduced to Europeans through Persia, which was

a popular stopping point along European and Asian trade routes. It was popular in the 1800s amongst wealthier people, especially for women’s ball gowns and formal dresses.

Luxury, durable material for costumes and formalwear

The thick and durable nature of taffeta, along with its historical background, make it the perfect choice for theatre costumes and period fancy dress. Contemporary uses included ruched and ruffled skirts and dresses. The metallic sheen makes it a popular choice for special occasions and Christmas celebrations!
